Interestingly, this animated film is set in 80s NYC (the Trade Towers are in the background). Even so, it’s set in a world where all types of animals are the residents, no people. A lonely dog orders an automated friend and they start to have fun in the city. After their trip to the beach, robot is left in the sand, where he fantasizes about various ways to return to his dog. The design is simple with plenty of clever animal characters and occasional smart comic directorial touches. There is no dialogue, but there are plentiful sound effects and lots of music. Surprisingly, lots of name brands show up from Juicy Fruit to Fruit Loops. It breaks no new stylistic ground for animation, but does feature a simple sweet tale of a special friendship. (2.5 / 5)
