Lonely Planet

Laura Dern plays a writer who attends a retreat in Morocco. The boyfriend of another writer (Liam Hemsworth) doesn’t fit with the intellectual crowd, so they eventually end up in the inevitable May/December romance. Since this has been done so many times lately, it’s imperative that something new or surprising gives the movie an advantage. No such luck. Luckily, the chemistry between them is good, but the situations are entirely predictable and the rest of the cast is rather bland (a missed opportunity). The whole affair plays out with mundane quiet conversations, forsaking much real drama or deep emotion. At least the setting adds a touch of culture. Other than that, this is yet another quickly forgotten love story. 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)
