We Live in Time

This is basically a glorified Hallmark “Disease of the Week” weepie elevated with A-list stars. Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh meet cute when she hits him with her car. This film time shifts constantly, going from their first encounter to the birth of their child to the inevitable tragedy. (You have to depend on Pugh’s hairstyles for a clue to time period.) Garfield, who spends almost every scene choking back tears, manages touching depth with his performance. Pugh is equally expressive and they both handle the glimpses of humor well. While their chemistry keeps the movie afloat, there’s surprisingly little real emotional impact, possibly because the time jumping concept dilutes the effect. Even so, this “time” doesn’t pack the wallop that the actors are capable of. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
