Maisy Stella plays a free-spirited teen who’s about to leave home for college. She spends a final weekend with her besties, where she takes a mushroom trip that conjures up the 39-year-old version of herself (Aubrey Plaza). The main warning she receives from “her old ass” is to avoid Chad (Percy Hynes White), but his charms make that a challenge. In many ways this is a fairly typical chick flick with the expected romantic and family elements. What helps it stand out are the characters: Stella is continually charming, White makes the ideal boyfriend and the few moments where Plaza is onscreen provides the most quirky fun. She’s really there only twice, which is a shame. Writer/director Megan Park fills the moments with enjoyable interactions and an appealing script, but it’s the performances that are the film’s best asset. They help it rise above a typical teen chick flick to create a bittersweet romcom. (3.5 / 5)
