Chris Pine co-wrote, directed and stars in the titular role, a character who spends his days meditating and cleaning the pool. This is a vanity project for Mr. Pine, allowing him to create an eccentric character in quirky situations. Danny DeVito and Annette Bening add some cred and a bit of comic support. Otherwise, the movie isn’t especially funny or even clever. It’s trying hard to be all those things, but Pine’s undeniable charm can’t rise above his uninventive script and lackluster direction. BTW, Pine’s actor dad, Robert, is voice of Lizard. (2 / 5)
