A Family Affair

Just last month Anne Hathaway played a woman falling for a younger man in The Idea of You (my review, which is better than this one). In less than 30 days, Nicole Kidman takes on the role of beautiful older woman who falls for her daughter’s action-star boss (Zac Efron). The expected complications occur as daughter (Joey King) struggles with the age difference and awkwardness of the relationship. There’s nothing new in the plot, while the uninventive situations and limp dialogue drag down any possibility of charm. Kidman is expectedly lovely, while Efron looks like an artificial leading man (his face doesn’t look natural anymore). Their chemistry is nothing special and neither has any opportunity to be funny. King is the only one who has any real comedy potential, but she isn’t given anything to work with. Despite the star power, there’s absolutely nothing about this film that makes it worth watching. Even the title is bland and unoriginal. 1 out of 5 stars (1 / 5)
