This is Tyler Perry’s first drama, based on a script he wrote 20 years ago. Anyone who’s watched his Medea movies knows he always peppers those wild comedies with moments of emotion, so he goes all out on the passion this time. Newcomer Josha Boone makes an impressive debut as an ambitious young Black man in 50s Georgia (he’s also a recent grad of VCUarts Theatre). His dreams are crushed when the love of his life is forced to leave town. When she returns, things have changed in ways that signal sure tragedy. While the performances are earnest, Perry’s love of big moments and even grander emotions is in full force. The writing often dips into melodrama and the scenario isn’t completely original, but Perry’s ability to handle drama make this an uneven but effective tragedy. (3 / 5)
