A Teacher (review)

Kate Mara plays a high school teacher who ends up in a dramatic affair with one of her students (Nick Robinson). Sure, this has been done before, including the 2013 feature film that was ALSO created by Hannah Fidel, but never with the depth of layers and blurred lines. The story continually crosses barriers into more and more risky encounters and dangerous decisions. The writing is intelligent, refraining from an easily prurient or sensational approach, while clearly depicting the implications from both sides. Mara is magnificent as she exposes her character’s many stages of need, desire and guilt. Robinson maintains a sweet innocence, while growing into a damaged adult. This series is a nuanced, well-directed and compellingly-acted treatment of this controversial subject.
