The British series leaps into action in the first scene, when police forcefully enter a suburban home and arrest the 13-year-old son (Owen Cooper). This show has several interesting aspects that make it stand out.
First, it’s told in four distinct episodes.
1. The arrest and interrogation of the kid
2, The detectives conducting their research at the boy’s school
3. Basically, a two-hander between the boy and a therapist
4. A look at the effect on the remaining family members with a devastating final scene from co-creator/actor Stephen Graham.
Interestingly, the grueling 3rd ep was actually shot first, which is even more incredible considering the depth and power of young Owen Cooper’s performance. He’ll certainly be recognized with awards, but the entire cast is completely mesmerizing (made even more effective considering the consistently invasive camera). What elevates this series even more is that each episode was shot in one continuous one-hour take. Not only does this provide an immediacy to the interactions, but the close camera contributes to an even more intimate experience. More amazing is the dazzling effort going on behind the scenes, which included transferring the hand-held camera to car rigs and even a drone without missing a beat (there are behind-the-scene videos online). Moving beyond the unique production approach, this series is brave filmmaking with impressive direction, remarkable acting and ultimately powerful results. (5 / 5)
