Michelle Williams plays a dedicated idealist who runs an orphanage in India. After she travels to NYC to meet a potential donor (Julianne Moore), she’s spontaneously invited to attend her daughter’s wedding. That’s when things take an unexpected turn. This drama plays out in short scenes (sometimes with no dialogue), which hinders the development of much emotional intensity. The performances are involving and director Bart Freundlich (also Moore’s husband) has deftly crafted a compelling story. It never becomes as powerful as the circumstances’ potential, but is still an intelligent and interesting examination of relationships. Interesting note: Abby Quinn, who plays the daughter, also wrote and sang the closing credit song. (Criterion Cinemas only)
