In the 80s, Nike was in 3rd place in the basketball shoe market (behind Adidas and Converse), but one of their team (Matt Damon) believed he found their source for success in a young rookie named Michael Jordan. Obs, we know the story from there, so this film details the process that was risky and disruptive, but ultimately created a game-changing partnership. Since virtually the only action is people talking, it’s vital that the writing is smart, the performances be compelling, the director knows how to keep the focus on the interactions. Luckily, all of these elements come together with Alex Convery’s script. The performances are solid and it was especially great to see Chris Tucker back. Viola Davis, as Jordan’s mother, once again stands out with her true but subtle portrayal. The music provided a fun period soundtrack. Ultimately, Ben Affleck’s simple, but assured directorial guidance helps bring it all together to create a fascinating look at this breakthrough event. 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
