Based on the YA novel, this film centers on the friendship between 2 Mexican-American teens in 1987 El Paso. Since they both seem to be misfits, the relationship takes on special meaning, which presents new challenges. Max Pelayo and Reese Gonzales are completely compelling in the leads and there’s a fine cast to support them. Given the time period and their family culture, their journey of self discovery goes remarkably smoothly with mostly minor drama. The subject has been covered a lot lately, but this story has tender resonance, thanks primarily to the Palayo & Gonzales. NOTE: In June I reviewed a French film that revolves around gay teens and is more touching called Close (my review). 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
