Moviegoers can always count on writer/director Martin McDonagh to create something unusual and interesting. He’s reunited his stars from In Bruges, Colin Farrell & Brendan Gleeson, as best friends living in a small island off the coast of Ireland in 1923. One day, Gleeson’s character declares he no longer wants to be friends, which is all the plot there is. Farrell’s character is devastated and spends the rest of the film trying to repair things. Farrell is especially charming with subtle comic skill, while Gleeson provides the gruff counterpoint. Barry Keoghan’s simply brilliant portrayal of a man with mental issues is captivating. There aren’t a lot of outright laughs, but McDonagh’s deceptively simple writing, the lovely performances and Irish charm merge into a quietly quirky and utterly amiable relationship story. (4 / 5)
