Barney Thompson

This film was actually released on 2015 (titled The Legend of Barney Thompson) and won a BAFTA for Best Feature Film, but it recently turned up on Amazon. Robert Carlyle (who also directed) plays a rather mediocre barber in Glasgow. When he accidentally kills his boss, the plot heads in a darkly comic direction. Carlye does fine in both capacities, but it’s Emma Thompson as his crude, crass mother who steals the show. Thompson has gone so far away from her usual characters to created this truly fun “Irish redneck.” Every time I was ready to quit the movie (pace slowed at times), there was another turn that kept my interest. Ultimately, the story, direction and Thompson’s performance turn this into an enjoyable little noir farce. NOTE: Stay thru the credits to enjoy some outtakes. 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
