Black Bird

Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Shutter Island) created this series, so that’s already a solid promise for something enthralling…and this lives up to that. Taron Edgerton plays a successful drug dealer who’s busted. His only hope for release is to pry prime information from a suspected serial killer (Paul Walter Hauser). While Edgerton effectively embodies many aspects of his character, it’s Hauser’s creepy killer that makes the show. The look in his eyes after “but they’re just dreams” promises early that he will be a new great screen psychopath. While this script is comprised largely of dual conversations, the writing, direction and performances combine to create a truly compelling and sometimes creepy exploration. This series is also notable because it’s Ray Liotta’s final performance. (Review based on 4 of 6 one-hour eps). 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
