Black Summer

This streaming hit about a group of people trying to survive the zombie apocalypse feels more indie and personal than the approach of The Walking Dead series. The “black” in the title refers to cities that are already dead, having been overrun by the undead. Sometimes an episode involves one group, while others revolve around different characters, but their plight is always one of outrunning zombies, while trying to avoid human villains. The direction is raw and scrappy, but deceptively smart with some incredible single-shot sequences. This series requires more patience than expected for the genre, but it pays off with real thrills and genuine tension. After watching both seasons, I can say that the 2nd one deteriorates into too much talk and offers a confusing narrative, but Season One is solid.  (8 one-hour episodes in each season) 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
