Kate Blanchett (in a wild, windswept red wig) goes for her action hero role as a tough bounty hunter sent to a desolate planet to rescue a girl. She unwittingly assembles a team to join the adventure in this adaptation of the popular video game. That group includes Kevin Hart (playing it straight), Jamie Lee Curtis (kinda bland) and a wiseass robot (Jack Black supposed to add the funny but is just obnoxious). Experienced horror director Eli Roth has stepped out of his genre to create a messy collection of sloppy, uninventive fights. The writing never adds any punch to the predictable narrative, leaving decent visual effects the only thing worth watching. While it’s paced well, it feels like one long random chase with occasional violent encounters. Come to think of it, sounds like a video game, not a movie.
