Bottoms

What starts as a typical high school romance has a twist: Rachel Sennot & Ayo Edebiri play besties who are desperate to get laid, but they’re also lesbians. They end up forming a fight club to attract their cheerleader crushes. When I attended, there were fewer than 10 people (mostly silent), but I looked into the later show and there was a bigger, younger crowd that was more responsive. So, there may be an age gap to appreciate the humor. While there’s an absurd energy that permutates the production, there’s also lots of brash jokes that fall flat. Sennot’s aggressive, constantly-screaming is not very sympathetic, while Edebiri’s confused compliance is a bit more relatable. Almost every supporting role creates some sort of “character” to add fun. This film is never dull and there are amusing moments, but many of the gags are trying too hard to be over-the-top outrageous and homo-friendly hilarious. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
