Jane Austen fans may be shocked and/or disappointed by this new series that’s also Shonda Rhimes’ first show for Netflix. On the positive side: This is the most visually lavish of any of its predecessors with gorgeous, extreme costumes (historical accuracy be dammed) and lavish, excessive decorations/locales. Also, since it’s from Rhimes, the cast is multi-ethnic, but not without a political motivation that’s explained in a later episode. On the negative: The writing and characters are absurdly predictable and any hint of humor is lacking. This take on Regency period love stories veers toward gushy romance novels with endless declarations, dramatic setbacks, secrets galore and steamy sexual encounters. Overall, it’s bound to win acclaim for the art direction, but nothing else about this series is remotely innovative…only mildly interesting.
