This isn’t a remake of the original 1993 thriller, but an origin story set in present day. The titular character still appears to mercilessly dispatch anyone who says his name 5 times in a mirror, but this film spends much more time on the background. With this genre 2 things matter: Is it scary and are the deaths terrifying. In this case, neither is true. There’s virtually no tension and the deaths, while bloody, aren’t especially effective or horrifying. All of the other political statements just add to the clutter.
