Alex Cross is the detective in James Patterson’s popular novels. Aldis Hodge is cast in the title role, as this DC homicide detective and foresenic psychologist on a relatively standard police procedural. After several murders are getting blamed on Black drug crime, he sets out to prove that someone else is behind them. In this case it’s a serial killer (Ryan Eggold), whose his evil procedure takes up more time as the series progresses. Meanwhile, Cross has to deal with the loss of his wife and helping his 2 kids adjust, adding the personal angle. This series starts slowly, building up the case and dealing with community blowback. It’s not until about halfway thru that tension starts to heat up. This series doesn’t offer anything new to the genre (the ending is obvious in the 7th episode), but it’s fun to see some DC locations, including famous Ben’s Chili Bowl and the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, which I’d never seen. If you enjoy intense personal drama and a solid, but unoriginal murder mystery, Cross will work fine. (8 one-hour eps) (3 / 5)
