Dance of the 41

This drama about a gay scandal in early 1900s Mexico is based on a true story, but the events of the film are largely fictionalized. It revolves around a Congressman who marries the President’s daughter, but leads a gay life. His primary outlet is a secret society of 42 men. The characters are all serious and the drama is relentless in its solemn overtone. The visuals (esp. the dresses) are beautiful and rich. The romantic encounters are reduced to a lot of longing and kissing. Even though this presents a landmark event in the country’s history, it does so with such stern, slow-burn grimness that it becomes frustrating, and considering the potential, rather lackluster. (Spanish dubbed in English) 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
