A boy with special powers escapes into a grand universe where a gunslinger (Idris Elba playing it cool) is tracking down a really evil man (Matthew McConaughey also playing it cool…and mean). He’s out to seek revenge and save us from a demonic takeover. I haven’t read the series of Stephen King stories that inspired this film, but the screenplay has many of his trademark elements. Put together, they create a truly compelling setup. Unfortunately, the payoff lands with yawn…or not at all. While there are some interesting visuals and the fights aren’t awful, the narrative never takes hold to provide any thrills or surprises.
