This remake stars Bruce Willis as a gentle surgeon, who takes revenge into his own gifted hands when his family is brutalized. It’s never been a surprise that Willis isn’t much of an actor and this performance mightily reinforces that fact (of course, Charles Bronson, star of the original, was even more wooden). The plot unfolds predictably, but the pace never lags. The only standout is the grisly murders, which is no surprise since it’s directed by Eli Roth, who’s know for exceptional visceral violence. Otherwise, it’s mundane by the numbers filmmaking.
