I never watched any of the previous 13 iterations of this series, but since Disney picked it up and creator Russell T Davies is back as showrunner, I decided to give it a watch. Ncuti Gatwa is best known as the bold queer student in Sex Education (my review) and Millie Gibson spent numerous seasons on the Brit hit Coronation Street. He plays The Time Lord and she’s his spunky sidekick. They travel thru space and time having quirky adventures and facing formidable enemies. Some of the sci-fi stuff is very cool, while other parts are downright cheesy. Thru it all there’s an emotional undercurrent. Gatwa is full of plucky energy and genuine heart, while Gibson is sweetly charming. This series is crammed with contradictions: Some of the situations are smart and cool, while other circumstances feel like low-budget TV. Ultimately, this uneven approach is hard to recommend or condemn, so it’ll really depend on your appetite for weird and wacky. (8 one-hour eps) (2 / 5)
