Drive-Away Dolls

Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke (his wife who identifies as queer) co-wrote this comedy, which he directed. It has some of the smartass attitude of Coen Brothers films and was originally titled “Drive-Away Dykes,” but was changed, probably for marketing reasons. The main characters are lesbians and there are a few moments of (tasteful) sex. Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan play the women who decide to take a road trip, but end up with unwanted baggage. This triggers the comically inept bad guys to track them down with the expected violent acts. Qualley captures the motormouth Texan with a lively charm, while Viswanathan is milder as the demure friend. Even though there’s plenty of wacko energy and other Coen touches, the scenario lacks much surprise and the comic moments fail more often than they land.  Some of the rants are too long and the psychedelic episodes add nothing but time (and Milley Cyrus in an uncredited cameo). This queer punk gangster farce has plenty of screwball energy, but the writing doesn’t match it. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
