Thomasin McKenzie plays an introverted worker at a reform school in 60s Massachusetts who is befriended by the striking new psychiatrist (Anne Hathaway). Their unlikely friendship heads in one direction, but takes a sinister turn. McKenzie effectively captures her character’s evolution, while Hathaway is alluring and charismatic in her blonde wig and elevated glamour. Director William Oldroyd, who made his name with Lady Macbeth (my review), again tackles a young woman making bold choices, but it takes a long time for things to develop. While the outcome is unexpected, getting there takes patience. Despite the strong performances, there’s not really sufficient tension or narrative significance to make it as compelling as it promises. 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)
