The plot follows a Mexican attorney (Zoe Saldana) who helps a cartel leader re-settle his family and fake his death, to free him up for reassignment surgery. That premise is unusual enough, but this is also a musical. Instead of outright singing, most of the songs are interior monologues or meaningful dialogue. They’re also rather unmemorable (except the final one). Karla Sofía Gascón is the first openly trans person to win Cannes’ Best Actress award, alongside her castmates, including Selena Gomez. She and the rest of the cast create rich characters. Writer/director Jacques Audiard (my review of Rust and Bone) often goes in new directions and this endeavor certainly takes some unexpected turns. Even so, this story of female empowerment is uneven: The performances are certainly strong and the story is mildly compelling, but the songs often seem weird. This feels more like an experimental film than a moving drama. (Much of the dialogue is subtitled Spanish) 2.5 out of 5 stars (2.5 / 5)

BTW, Saldana is also starring in season 2 of Lioness. It’s better with more action than season 1. (my review)
