THE PLAY: Two gloomy wives in 20s England rent a Italian villa for April. They invite two other women who aren’t any happier and their holiday brings a renewed joy for life.
THE PRODUCTION: If this feels like a chick flick for the stage, that’s good…because the quartet of women in the primary roles are the show’s strength. They handle the emotions and comedy with aplomb. The men, alas, seem more tentative in their portrayals. Pat Walker’s direction is competent. The first act set is simply shoddy, while Act Two opens up to reveal a busy villa. (There is a danger in auctioning off walk-on roles. See the show for proof.)
THE POINT: A romantic comedy given a capable production.
