Everybody’s Talking about Jamie

This movie was first a musical in London which was actually inspired by a doc about a 16-year-old drag queen. In this case, new actor Max Harwood plays the infectiously upbeat teen who is already out, but takes a bolder step when he decides to attend him prom in drag. Of course, at first he must venture into the community for support, which is where he discovers an aging mentor queen (Richard E. Grant). Playing a flamboyant character can be a challenge, but Grant merges just the right amount of campy flourishes with a sincere soul. The songs are pop based and largely unforgettable, but the production numbers are flashy. Other than that, this basic theme of gay empowerment is getting a bit tired and with its trite cast of pro and anti-gay types this entry won’t do much to keep people “talking.” 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
