These streaming dramas both revolve around a family with devastating situations.
Friend of the Family Jake Lacy is best known for his big smile and surly spoiled rich guy in the 1st season of White Lotus. For this role he uses his considerable charm to bury his attraction to the young daughter of close neighbor family (Colin Hanks & Anna Paquin). Even though the parents play a big part and an FBI agent remains staunchly dedicated to the case, it’s really Lacy’s movie. The character is written with friendly appeal making his sick sociopath tendencies seem even more reprehensible and Lacy captures all of that complexity. This film is based on a true story, but the series could have been tightened up to eliminate some of the repetitive dialogue. Even so, all of the performances make it darkly compelling. (Review based on 8 of 9 one-hour eps with the final one coming 11/10) (3.5 / 5)

Inside Man This series takes place in 2 different countries: One is on death row in the US, while the other plays out in England. Stanley Tucci plays a convicted killer who also helps solve murders from his cell. Across the pond, a vicar (David Tennant) has an early encounter with a troubled parishioner. This event is the seed for a series of conflicts that continually twist. Tucci and Tennant are both superb, as is the rest of the cast. Some bad decisions are made early on, which set things in motion, sometimes seeming convoluted. Even so, once things start to roll, it’s a fascinating exploration of 2 very different sets of characters and what we’re all capable of doing. (4 one-hour eps) (4 / 5)
