Families in turmoil

Both of these Hulu series deal with couples coping with conflicts during trying times. One is framed in NYC with family issues, while the other is set in England during the shutdown.

Fleishman is in Trouble Jesse Eisenberg plays a Jewish New York doctor with 2 kids and an estranged wife (Claire Danes). When she disappears for several weeks, he’s left with all the responsibility for his offspring, plus the pain and worry of being abandoned. On top of that, add 2 good friends to commiserate about the meaning of life, happiness, success and other navel-gazing subjects. Eisenberg continues his usual neurotic type performance with lots of despair and drama. Since this is based on a novel, there’s a narrator that becomes tedious in its continuous explanations. There are some interesting aspects of the series, esp. when mom’s whereabouts are revealed, but the self-involved characters get tedious pretty quickly. (Eight one-hour episodes) 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)

Together This film sometimes features couple James McAvoy and Sharon Horton directly addressing the camera (which is never explained and confusing when they don’t). It begins the first day of COVID lockdown in England and continues thru the next year, as they relate the progress of the epidemic thru their own lens. The film is less about that and more about them as they re-evaluate their relationship in their forced togetherness. Director Stephen Baldry has managed to keep what could be a dull two-hander interesting, primarily thanks to the exceptional performances from the 2 actors. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
