In this version of the post-climate-disaster world, Tom Hanks plays a loner who has to flee from his shelter to avoid massive storms. He sets out with his faithful dog and a new robot. The narrative starts promisingly and the ravaged planet moments are effective, but several things get in the way: the unexplained success of their survival despite obvious logical flaws, the absurdly cute factor of the robot’s personality and the cloying attempts at sweetness and charm. Luckily, Hanks manages to make it bearable, but as the film progresses, the attempts at emotion become so obviously manipulative that it loses most of its earlier appeal. (2 / 5)
