It’s an interesting concept: 2 actors sing solos about their relationship over 5 years. Her story runs backward from the end, while his starts at the beginning. They intersect in the only duet, their marriage. This Off-Broadway musical has been brought to the screen with Anna Kendrick as a struggling actor and Jeremy Jordan as a successful writer. They both sing well and act effectively, but the direction by Richard LaGravenese doesn’t add anything especially interesting (sometimes the handheld work is distracting). This film has appeared without fanfare and will leave the same way, but it holds appeal for those who appreciate tuneful songs, endless solos and a thorny romantic story. (Criterion Cinema only)
