As Netflix expands its world, more and more foreign films are showing up. Here are 2 new ones: The first comic  book hero from Russia and a horror tribute from Italy.

Major Grom: Plague Doctor  I waited a week to write this review, then I realized I didn’t remember that much about it. Guess that makes a statement about its effect. This is an adaptation of the Russian comic book series and the first superhero from that country. The titular plague is one of lawlessness in the city of St Petersburg (which is beautifully presented). The authorities are overrun by crime until a masked avenger starts to eliminate the evil rich and powerful. It’s up to the inevitable rogue cop and his partner to stop the outbreak. There are some dynamic action sequences, lovely locations and a sufficient pace to keep it involving without being especially memorable (in my case at least). (In Russian with subtitles or dubbed in English) 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

A Classic Horror Story With that title, you can expect references to the great films, including the plot. A group of young travelers ends up with a broken down car in the desolate woods. Their plight is solidified by attacks from the inevitable mysterious cult that inhabits the area and practices its creepy rites. Since this isn’t a satire, the only reason to watch is for the killings. The first big one is pretty horrific, but after that they’re just average and not shot or edited in an especially horrific way. The characters are stereotypes and the narrative has one obvious twist that defies logic. This homage doesn’t add anything new or surprising to the genre and the tension never materializes. (In Italian with subtitles or dubbed in English) 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)
