Michelle Pfeiffer plays a glamorous, redhead NY socialite who learns that her fortune is spent, so she heads to Paris with her spoiled son (Lucas Hedges) and their cat. From the beginning, Pfeiffer’s aloof, imperious, bitchy character isn’t especially likable and Hedges is just bland. This is the same writer/director team that created The Sisters Brothers (my review) and they’ve gone further out in left field with this attempt at quirky. It’s sometimes interesting, but also frustrating because the events and interactions often seem random or just trying too hard to be clever. The closed-off characters never develop, which doesn’t add to the appeal. The film works hard to be eccentric, but Pfeiffer’s performance is the only thing to recommend it. (3 / 5)
