You might have high expectations for this film, since Kristen Wiig is the star. But if you think of her as just another actor, you’ll end up being pleasantly entertained. She underplays her usual oddball as a New Yorker struggling with her career, boyfriend and life in general. After an unfortunate incident she ends up back at home in NJ with her mother (Annette Bening is a delightful turn). The film tries too hard to be one of those quirky character charmers, but it sometimes succeeds, although predictably. It’s not hilarious, but sweetly amusing. (Criterion Cinema only)
