Gold

Zac Efron plays a wanderer in a scorthed-Earth future, who gets a ride with a stranger (Anthony Hayes who also wrote and directed). Along the way they discover a gold nugget so big that they need equipment to extract it. While the driver goes back for the tools, Efron’s character stays alone in the desolate environment. First, the absurdity of this premise undermines reality…why didn’t they both journey back? Anyway, this unlikely situation leaves him open for the expected challenges; thirst, hunger, wild dogs, hallucinations and the inevitable dust storm. Thru it all, his greed pushes him to struggle on. This gives Efron an opportunity to suffer, but he doesn’t manage much depth thru all the dirt. The only thing to recommend this film is the unexpected ending, but that’s not worth sitting thru the environmental torture. 2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)
