The movie Anyone But You put Glen Powell on the map as the new romcom crush (my review). While this new effort may continue his rise as a charismatic leading man, it’s not as memorable. He plays a nerd in the police department who assigned to pretend to be a hit man in a sting operation. After his first arrest, he takes to the role with numerous disguises and continual success. The montage of character types might have promised a comic angle, but things quickly abandon that goal for a more straightforward story with a romance tossed in. Director Richard Linklater understands narrative and this one moves with interest, thanks primarily to Powell’s charms. This film won’t be remembered as one of Powell’s great efforts, but it’s acceptably entertaining. (2.5 / 5)
