Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.

Fortunately, Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall head up this cast (and are almost the only characters), because their acting skills are what works about this film. They play the husband/wife team of a large evangelical church, who are trying to make a comeback after a scandal. The not-very-original framing device is that a documentary crew is following them as they cope. Even though this feels like it should be a comedy and there are definitely satirical angles, the funny never happens. Plus, there’s a dark undertone to their relationship that adds conflict. While the duo is working hard (maybe even too hard), the writing is uninspired and the direction doesn’t help. The result is an acting exercise for the cast and a sad satire for the viewer.
