THE PLAY: This musical examines relationships from the first date to marriage and beyond thru sketches and songs. The revised version features new numbers and updated references.
THE PRODUCTION: This production was only 4 days away from opening, when COVID shut everything down, but it was worth the wait. This ensemble enlivens the comic complexities of the writing with endless energy and good timing. Luke Schares is hilarious as the bucktoothed inmate, while Rachel Marrs shines as the fashion-shamed bridesmaid. The lyrics are loaded with spot-on observations and witty rhymes, but there are a few moment of genuine emotion, especially Nicole Morris-Anastasi in her dating video and Ian Page’s tender “Shouldn’t I Be Less in Love with You.” Since there isn’t a choreographer listed, we can only assume that director Tom Width carried those duties with delightful staging that echoes the spirited script. Width’s set is a room-ish that serves as the base layer for various set pieces, while Joe Doran’s lights dress up the often sparse stage. Maura Lynch Cravey has created looks that mirror a variety of character types, including the wonderfully hideous bridesmaid gown. The band under the direction of Shellie Johnson provides solid backing. Running time: 2:15
THE POINT: This musical offers exceedingly clever insights into modern human connections, while the performers and staging bring them delightfully to heart.
