For a German import, this romance is surprisingly (and somewhat disappointedly) formulaic. It’s even been described as a romcom, but Germans aren’t know for their “com.” Maren Eggert plays a stern art researcher with a rather bland life. As part of an experiment, she’s assigned to live with a humanoid robot who’s been designed to be her perfect partner (Dan Stevens speaking German well). Naturally, she resists his easy, digital charms, while his algorithms work hard to adjust to her needs. Even with this considerably advance tech, there’s nothing else about the film that’s technologically advanced. The performances are fine and the direction keeps it moving. Basically, it’s a sweet little story that considers, yet again, whether tech advancements really help improve our lives. (German with subtitles) (3 / 5)
