In the Land of Saints and Sinners

Liam Neeson continues his streak of hired assassins, but this time he’s a “kindler/gentler” killer. The setting is a small village in 70s Ireland. After one final job, he determines to abandon the criminal life to find peace and reconciliation. That’s until a crew of IRA terrorists arrive to cause trouble. Being that this is an earlier time and quiet place, the “action” is minimal and more subdued. The beautiful locations are appreciated via the cinematography and the Irish charm comes thru from the inhabitants’ lovely lilts. Neeson does his usual decent job and his supporting cast is populated with strong Irish actors. A quiet tension that slowly builds during the film comes to a relatively compelling finale. Anyone expecting Neeson’s typical action hero will find this more about people and place with a certain bit of Irish charm. 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
