Even though it’s the 3rd in the series, this is actually a prequel. It’s another haunting story with a teenager (Stefanie Scott) who’s terrorized by an evil presence. Psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) is thrown in the mix for continuity. The ingredients are typical: ominous music, dark hallways, ghoulish specters and jump scares. There were 2 or 3 genuine jolts, but the rest is just fearsome atmosphere and mild suspense. Nothing original or particularly frightening.
