Killing snakes & killer baby

Both of these comedies take a dark look at death and relationships. One centers around deadly pythons, while the other focuses on a fatal infant.

Killing It Craig Robinson heads the cast of this unique comedy from the creators of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His marriage has failed and his job prospects are nil, so he enters a contest to kill pythons  (it’s Florida where they’re rampant). Already, this is a setup for comic potential, but that opportunity ramps up with Claudia O’Doherty’s offbeat performance as his relentlessly upbeat chatty partner. The narrative sometimes branches off into other character’s stories, which adds a new perspective with some truly touching emotional accents. Robinson’s hapless delivery and the spiraling situations provide some absurdly outrageous situations and plenty of genuinely funny moments sweetened with a touch of heart. (Ten 30-minute eps, but only the 1st one is free. The others require a subscription.) 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

The Baby This series starts with a riveting chase sequence that ends with a deadly surprise. From there on, everywhere the titular infant goes, people mysteriously die. Michelle de Swarte plays the woman who ends up in charge of the toddler, trying to figure out how to avoid her own demise and injury to others. While there aren’t any outright laughs, there’s def a dark comic overtone in the absurdity of the premise. The additional 2 episodes that are available don’t have quite the outrageous edge, but it still looks like an unusual series with rich dark potential. (Review based on 3 of eight 30-minute eps with additional ones dropping weekly.) 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
