Emma Corrin (best known as Diana on The Crown) plays the Lady who marries into an aristocratic British family. When her husband comes home from the war in a wheelchair, he condones her seeking pregnancy with another man. Turns out to be the lowly gamekeeper (Jack O’Donnell) and after LOTS of passionate kissing, they finally get deeply erotic and even romp naked in the rain. It’s pretty obvious where the story is headed, so getting there is the challenge. Corrin is effective as the conflicted woman, but it’s O’Donnell whose depth most fervently captures the conflict. Their chemistry works. In keeping with period (some gorgeous dresses), the pacing is languid and the general attitude is subdued. As a result, the drama doesn’t really gain traction until the final few minutes and even then, it’s not especially gratifying. (3 / 5)
