Leonardo

Aiden Turner is most recognized from his titular role in the popular PBS show Poldark. Now he’s taking on the task of the great Leonardo da Vinci. There’s a framing device that puts him in jail for a supposed murder, allowing him to recount his career and life to his captor (Freddie Highmore). This event didn’t really happen and the producers have taken some latitude with the bio’s accuracy, but it’s still an absorbing narrative. Turner embraces his character with the intensity of the tortured artist. There are highlights from the creation of several of di Vinci’s masterpieces, while it also dives into the political complications and personal demons that constantly troubled his life. This is a co-production of several countries and the actor’s accents show it, but it tells the story on a grand scale with lovely locations and fascinating insights. (Review based on 6 of 8 one-hour episodes with a 2nd season already slated.) 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
