Interestingly, I just saw FAMILY (my review), which follows a very similar storyline: an obnoxious, career-obsessed woman has her outlook changed by a troubled 13 year old. In this case, it was the younger version of herself. Regina Hall plays the adult version with a vengeance, while Marsai Martin takes over the role as the teen. The inevitable nice, humanity-bringing assistant is covered by Issa Rae. The movie’s energy never sags, but the writing is seldom funny, there are not especially quirky characters and the inevitable turnaround message is pure self-empowerment drivel. The only things worth watching are the cool clothes by Danielle Hollowell.
