Apparently, I’ve fallen out of line with current trends in horror films. I was underwhelmed by two other recent well-reviewed thrillers, It Follows (my review) & The Babadook (my review). This one falls in that same category of unimpressed. Miaka Monroe plays an FBI agent on the psychic trail of the titular serial killer (Nicolas Cage with a whiny voice and so much makeup he’s unrecognizable). Her pursuit is a slow simmer with a continuous atmosphere of ominous anxiety. The few on-camera kills are quickly dispatched, so the typical gory core of a slasher flick is “cut out.” That leaves the psychological pursuit angle, which is never remotely tense, just creepy. I kept waiting for the big shocking finale and it never materialized. This film is flat, disappointing and not remotely scary. BTW, local actor Blair Underwood plays the other FBI agent.
