Even though she’s supposed to be quirky and charming, I’ve never found Greta Gerwig either (in this movie or her 2 other leads in Frances Ha & Mistress America). She plays a woman ready to have a baby, when she falls for a married man (Ethan Hawke). Complications ensue when his ex-wife (Julianne Moore, in a fun take on a Danish intellectual) gets in the mix. This feels like a minor Woody Allen film: New York locations, a group of academics, confused love and plenty of neuroses. Although it’s moderately involving, it’s hardly ever funny, clever or especially unique. Plus, I found most of the other actors more interesting than Gerwig. (Criterion Cinemas only)
